It has been too long since you've heard from me!

"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships"
-Michael Jordan

Well let me catch you up on what I've been doing. Just because I haven't been writing doesn't mean I haven't been doing my hours. So the Southland's basketball team have been having a few games but I haven't gone to all because sometimes it's too far away or there isn't enough room on the bus for me (only sits 9 people). Now when the varsity girls have games, the jv girls are at practice and vise verse. I take turns going to each practice and games and the first time which was on December 3rd the varsity girls had a basketball game in La Verne and I wasn't able to take pictures because I didn't have anyone else to help me but I did keep track of the girls stats and write down anything I saw that any of the girls can improve on. I wish I can talk the girls up by saying they were amazing, but they weren't. And it's okay because almost every girl on that team is a first timer at the sport and you definitely saw their dedication at practice pay off.

Once I get the official schedule of the girl's games I will definitely be letting Purther know, as well as my friends so the word can spread, when the games are so we can all enjoy some basketball! :-)

Manager of Girl's Basketball Team (late post)

11/29/13 (9AM-12:40AM) late post

So yesterday was actually really interesting for me. We had practice earlier than usual because we wanted time in the gym for once before the guys beat us to it, and not to mention is was raining, but I got there 20 minutes earlier because my mentor for my independent component Coach Johnson said he wanted to talk to me before the girls came. When I arrived we did small talk while setting up the cones and taking the balls out but once we were done we sat down and he ask me if I saw commitment in any girls yet and I have actually. You can tell by the way the girls play on the court if they're mad, stressed, sad, or any emotion they're feeling but the ones who talk it out and verbally say what's wrong are the ones who show the most commitment in my eyes. Why? Well because they know life isn't going to be perfect but they will focus their attention on the game so at least in their mind, they're perfect at one thing. And by perfect I don't mean 100% shots or memorizing every play, I mean the drive and confident they have to have a successful practice. The reason my coach asked me that was because this practice was VERY important for the girls and they had no idea why, of course neither did I. This practice was going to determine which girls will be starting in the first game they will be having this Tuesday (December 3rd) at Southland's. Also the blue thing in the top photo is a shield that I have to used to push the girls around in the court which they play so that they get used to girls on the other team pushing them around and in the last photo on your right is a photo of Southland's in the rain to show even on raining days and a day after our holiday we still work hard. Unfortunately you can't see the rain.
Another thing I feel I should share that I really enjoyed was that around 11:30AM our practice in the gym was over because it was time for the guys to use the court but practice wasn't over yet because we still had a team bonding (lunch)/ secret sister paper at the "clubhouse" aka coach Johnson's community pool house. We played a few games to get all the girls talking and coach Johnson actually made us turkey-ham pasta (sounds gross but was really good actually) and we sat around this long table and filled out a Secret Sister paper which is where we fill out information about ourselves so that whichever girl we get as our "sister," we'd have to buy them a gift every home game just to encourage them to do better. We will not find out who our Secret Sister is until the basketball banquet. After we did that we just talked more and went around the table naming 2 things this year that are stressful just so that every girl knows that we all have things we're worried about and maybe as a team we can overcome it together.

OH AND BEFORE I FORGET, I received my first southland's t-shirt! I really like it and I can't wait to wear it Tuesday to show my support.

(Just a little preview, if you guys want to see the shirt I will be wearing it on Tuesday.)

Blog 9: EQ

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an EQ.

  • Point of an EQ: "to help the students build a strong foundation of research which will allow him or her to create an essential question that encourages depth and rigor in the chosen topic."
  • EQ must: have depths of research, not a yes/no question, have a purpose, & be well formatted.
2. Do the following EQs meet the rule of 3 criteria, explain why or why not.
a.  What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?
EQ meets the criteria of 2, somewhat 1, and doesn't really meet 3.
Why? Well because so many people can argue what they believe is the correct answer (2nd criteria) while also providing some sort of research to back up their beliefs.

b.  What is most important to securing a conviction in a criminal investigation?
EQ meets the criteria of 2 and 1, but does not meet 3 at all.
Again anyone can argue for their beliefs and prove it with some facts. And it doesn't apply to the last one because it's wording so so bad where it leaves us wondering who and what to answer this question.

c.  What is most important in creating a hairstyle that best satisfies a customer?
EQ meets the criteria of 2 and 3, but doesn't meet 1.
This EQ seems like it's already answer by talking about the customers because you should "listen to them." It's not really giving us the liberty to answer it, they should've worded it differently.

d.  How can an Anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
EQ meets all the criterias!
It meets all because it's asking for everyone to do research but also stating their opinion along the way. And the word "treat" helps us specify what we are looking for.

Manager of Girl's Basketball Team

"Be brave like a lion, cunning like a tortoise, wise like a serpent, immovable like a rock..., and... fear no evil... God is in You, with You." -Easytee

(Just wanted to take a picture before I left practice at Southlands to show how dark it is now thanks to the time change but also helps us a lot because now we're not in the sun sweating, but in the cold (which every girl on the team can agree on is better than the heat).

Today I’m pretty sure I got some good hits, by that I mean, I was the girl’s opponent and I had a shield so I can push the girls to make sure they’re keeping their stance firm but also correct. I was on the half court line and the girls had to run to me with full speed, stop a little by pushing me two steps back and turn around blocking me from the ball and try to shoot (some girls ran too fast and hit me too hard to be honest). This drill is called the Jersey components (bury). Then this girl Rachel from the team is a working progress and she knows what she’s doing most of the time but she has a hard time focusing on being firm so during the “5v0 Orchestra: 50/40/Blue 2X (7 passes or 2 reversals)” drill. My favorite drill of all was the “3-6-9 shooting” where we shoot 2 times w/ 1 hand & 2 times w/ 2 hands and if you get 4 out 12 then you get h2o and return back to doing the 3-6-9- 3X 2 handed but this time the pull-up jumpers. It’s my favorite because I’m really good at it and I can see how much different the girls are at grabbing the ball but also the different ways they’re comfortable shooting.

Manager of Girl's Basketball Team: Day 2

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character..." -Romans 5:3,4

Every Wednesday is "frustration day" which basically pushes every girl to their limits. Today we started off by doing a mile run (5 laps around the football field under ten minutes) and then warms up which are: 10 yards scissor skips/paper clips/ figue 4/lunges (fwd & rev)/Lateral lunges/monsters/calf bounce/ Iron cross/ hurdler stretch/calf stretch all on the football field since the football guys didn't have practice today. After that we moved on too the outside courts and throughout the drills I put on boxing gloves and pushed the girls or "hit" the girls while they dribbled the ball so they understand how it is during real games. Later I set the cones up for the girls to do the Huggins Box Out: Breakdown, basically the girls sit down back to back and when the coach (in this case me) yell "swim," the girls have to get up (still touching each other's back) and push the other person passed the cone. After that we did other ball handling drills and the coach had some girls and I had the others and we just worked on throwing the ball to them and having them react to it by catching the ball in the air, holding it tight (so we went up to them and it the ball and if the ball left their hands they have to do 5 push ups), then they worked on pivoting forward and backwards, and lastly shooting. Lastly we did clearance so we stretched everything before going home.

P.S.
Considering the fact that Southlands is a Christian high school I've decided too use the bible quote Coach Johnson uses before practice, unless I like the other quote or catchy sayings he uses, but for now I think i'll use the bible references.
And no pictures today because there really was no time or extra person to help take pictures, next time! :-)

Blog 8: Research and Working EQ

1.  What is your working EQ?

My working EQ is definitely working. I have three that I'm thinking about. My 1st one: how would you coach a varsity softball team well enough to make it to make it to CIF (California Interscholastic Federation), my 2nd one is: what do CIF softball girls look like, and lastly: how is a coach a reflection on how CIF girl's are suppose to look like?

2.  What is a possible answer to your working EQ? Please write the answer in thesis format.
I'll go with the one that's on my blog, for now until I can figure out what my main one is.

EQ: How would you coach a varsity softball team well enough to make it to CIF?

  • Being committed to something helps the person improve in the subject they learning or preforming. Wanting to do something is different from actually following through with it. Going to practice to improve on a sport is what drives the coach just like the teachers are driven to teach when all of us come to class prepared and ready to listen. If the teacher isn't committed and the students (players) aren't committed then what do you have? A group of people. Nothing more. Commitment on both end are really important because without each other they won't go anywhere.
3.  What is the most important source you have used that has helped you come up with an answer to your working EQ?
The fact that my mentor and independent component are different sports which means different perspectives, helped me see the similarities in coaching but also the differences. The way each coach is different is the way they the teach the drill or run practices but also how strict they are.

4.  Who is your mentor, or where are you volunteering, and how does what you are doing relate to your working EQ?
My mentor is Jennifer Dorado and she is the La Puente High School varsity softball coach. She has taken her softball girls to CIF so she has experience on what to do to get there.

Manager of Girl's Basketball Team: Day 1

"Be quick but don't hurry" -John W.

I went to practice today not knowing exactly what I would do as manager but let me tell you, being manager was so stressful! First we started off with the weight room and the weight room is taken very serious for the basketball girls because a lot of them are weak and don't like to push themselves so today coach Johnson made me show the girls how to do the workouts and then walk around and help girls who needed it. The picture of the girls on the basketball court is a picture of coach showing the girls the new "Traffic" drill. It's basically when everyone is running in the court to get the ball into the opposite side they started on with certain obstacle's to overcome. The picture of the weight room is a picture of Southland's weight room AKA girls basketball "second home." And last picture of the paper is a picture of how our workout schedules will be formatted and posted. These change weekly or sometimes more, depending on what the coach has in mind or how the girls progress is going. Once we were out on the court, coach made me run a couple of drills he believed were easy enough for me to run. Those drills were: Grass Lunge Complex/Kneeling Chest Pass (which helps strengthening the girls arm muscle so the basketball becomes a light enough object to toss or catch) and the South Bump Breakdown (basically helps the girls determine when they are helping their teammate by telling them to "bump" because they're guarding the person). Overall today didn't sound stressful but being in charge of a group of girls is actually really frustrating because they don't always listen and always complain. I'm looking forward to seeing them succeed in their future games.

P.S.
Coach Johnson starts off every practice with a catchphrase or quote so the quote on my independent component post will be from something someone said or quoted that caught my attention.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

"Live and play each day with no regrets! Leave it all out on the field! Don't wait for tomorrow when you still have today to be a great-play for today!"
-Marino

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
Considering my topic is Coaching a Softball Team (high school girls), I would need to be on a team with girls around my age and unfortunately to be in a softball team I was suppose to tryout over the summer but over the summer this topic wasn't my original plan. However thanks to Purther for giving me suggestions, one of them being that I could be in any girls team or shadow because my true topic is coaching and not playing softball. I plan to do my hours at Southland's where I am manager of the girls basketball team.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
In my independent component log there is a "coach's comment(s)" and "picture" section and those two are where I plan to show evidence. My log worksheet will actually be printed out because every time I go to practice I will write down the activities we are doing that day but also the coach's comments column will actually be written by the coach(s). The coach's comment(s) will help me improve and see what as a coach, he will write to help a player become better.

3.  And explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
By being manager of the girls basketball team I
I believe that I'm going to get a good idea of how coaches are similar in actions and words with the help of the coach, Mr. Johnson. Both softball and basketball are contact sports so coaching wise it won't be as different as it would have been if it was softball and volleyball. I will still be attending softball practices will my mentor Jennifer but it will be just helping her out with anything or filling in for certain girls that are absent and not really being on the team.
Going back to being manager of the team, what that means is I will be helping out with drills as an extra person defender and a bunch of other task to make it harder and more game like for the girls. Mr. Johnson said I would also be able to play games if a girl wasn't able to make it.

Character, "what are you willing to put in?"

Over the summer I tried out for Southland's basketball team and one thing the coach really emphasized was character. I thought maybe just because it's a christian school they want people to really be in touch with who they are and what they want but then I remembered what Jennifer would tell the girls during softball practices which was "I'm not doing this for me, I already went to CIF and won." That statement alone always gets the girls mad and determine to show Jen that they wanted it too. Mr. Johnson who is the girls basketball coach always asks the girls what THEY want to accomplish once he goes over the game plan for practice and the girls really think about it because we all know we can't be great at every drill but as long as we put the same amount of energy and commitment towards them we'll find the things we're good at even if we thought we weren't. Whenever we would get frustrated with a drill, he'd make us step out of the court and if we want to get back in we needed to give two reasons why and it couldn't be something like "because I want to be on this team." "So do others girls," will be your response from Mr. Johnson. He really wants the girls to think about why they are there in practice and if it's not for themselves then why are they there at all? Who are they doing it for and why? Character is based on an individual doing it for themselves not for anyone else.

Character is still a main part of Jen's practices but isn't really thrown out there, it's more for you to decide if character is what she's looking for. She teaches the drills to these girls the best that she can and since these girls are varsity they should expect to do what anybody would do if they don't understand something, ASK. At first it seemed weird to me because she's a coach and she should make sure everyone is on the same page but at the same time these girls went through tryouts and they're on the team because they understand the game and/or are good at certain positions. No girl out there is well rounded when it comes to softball or any sport. You'll always standout in something you are good in so when Jen has the girls do a drill and they don't speak up to say that they don't understand, she takes into consideration the girl's motive and if she's really committed to the team.
Both are different examples of character I was exposed to with my mentor and basketball coach. Coaches all think alike no matter the sport and within my first month, Character seems to be number one on the list.

"Character is a victory, not a gift."

Blog 6: Second Interview (2nd Interview Questions)

"We don't wear cups, we win them" - Tim McGraw

1.
Mentor: Jennifer Dorado
Workplace: La Puente High School

2. Questions:

  • How long have you been working at La Puente High School?
  • How has your college experience prepared you for your coaching career?
  • What college did you go to and what did you study there?
  • Did you have any specific goals you established for your career?
  • What went through your head when you won your first game as a coach?

Blog 5: Project Reflection and Working EQ

"Softball isn't a one woman sport, there's 11 other girls who become your sisters. And don't forget that you win as a team and lose as a team."

(1) Positive Statement: What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far? A positive outtake of all I've done so far for my topic was pretty much realizing that this topic so far is really intriguing and enjoyable. I actually enjoy doing research for this topic and i'm not only looking at it as a topic but maybe a career path I could take or can help me link to another career? Who knows yet.

(2) EQ Content: Pick a piece of research or your interview. How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic? My research has improved a little of my understanding of what becoming or being a softball coach takes but NOTHING really compares to actually talking/mentoring someone under that field because they can talk to you a little more about what they did and break everything down for you without all this meaningless sentences that are sometimes just there to make a page look nice. Jennifer really loves her job and I can tell by the tone in her voice as she was answering my interview questions or as I would just talk to her about her team.

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project? What has worked so far is my understanding on all the research and the reasoning of most things that coaches do. I think it all has to do because i'm already familiar with the sport. Another thing that work was correcting what I had believed about softball coaches, for example like how much they earn and if they were a teacher and coach for the same school they would earn more no matter what but I was obviously wrong about that. (check my last post, "I didn't know that?")

(4) What hasn't worked so far? The only thing that hasn't been working so far for my senior project is my schedule trying to fit in with Jennifer's (mentor) softball practices. Since LPHS has only been in school for a month practices haven't been a daily thing so  they have them every Thursdays and I have basketball practices every Tuesdays and Thursdays. There were times where I left practices early to get to LPHS just so I can catch at least the last 30 minutes of softball practice but it hasn't been working out. As the year go on, Jennifer's schedule will change to daily practices and that will be way easier for me because I would have 3 days to make it to any practice.

(5) Finding Value:
  •  What is a potential question you would like to study this year? (working EQ) A question I would like to study this year would probably be something like, "how would you coach a varsity softball team well enough to make it to make it to CIF (California Interscholastic Federation)?" I want a question that helps me learn the background, basic drills, and requirements. I really want to learn this topic well enough where you think I'm good enough to become a coach at age 17.
This website helps me keep track of LP's softball team eligibility to go to CIF: http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/la-puente-warriors-(la-puente,ca)/softball/home.htm
  •  What do you plan to do for mentorship?  If you haven't found a mentor yet, then discuss where you are currently looking and who you are talking to to find it.  What I plan to do for my mentorship is to help Jennifer out with practice, familiarize myself well enough with coaching and maybe once a month (for these 3 months) coach a whole practice. I'll definitely ask questions about something I read if I find it confusing or need more explanation.

I didn't know that!

On Monday, August 26, I was looking for some research and I came across something I found really interesting which was the average salary of a high school coach in the United States. Now before I say more, I must admit I thought that if you were a teacher AND a coach at a high school you would earn more money because well, you are doing more than the other teachers. According to http://www.ehow.com, there are "better earnings for coaches, especially when schools hire full-time coaches on a salary rather than simply paying a teacher an extra stipend to handle coaching duties." With that being said, I found it really interesting to find out that I was wrong but not completely! (Not that I  mind being wrong because I don't at all.) Of course when it comes to jobs, location is always a top 3 factor to consider, correct? Well same for softball coaches. School districts that are wealthier tend to have a bigger budget that's put towards their athletic programs which means the coaches have better earnings. Not only does location matter for the income of a softball coach but the more experience you are the more money you earn. Let's say we have a history teacher who used to coach a softball team but stopped coaching to teach if the school were to hire him/her to coach the softball team, THEN the history teacher/ coach would receive more money than the other teachers with location not being a factor because the teacher has experience. (That's what I mean by not completely wrong.)

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, coaches with:
  • Low-End Salary earn less than $15,000.
  • According to a 2010 article written by Eric Sondheimer for the Los Angeles Times, High-End Salary (experienced head coaches) in countries where the most competitive high school leagues are can usually make a little bit over $100,000 per year.
  • Average Salary: 50% of high school coaches can earn between $18,220 - $43,440 per year in 2008 and these same statistics mean that "the median annual wages in 2008 for full-time coaches in secondary schools was around $22,000."

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

"Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off, the right pitch will come and when it does be prepared to run the bases." -Sara Ann Nielsen

1. The person I plan on interviewing is La Puente High School's varsity coach, Jennifer Dorado. My topic is "coaching a softball team," but specifically a high school one and LPHS is literally down the street from me so why not go there for my first interview. Plus my best friend, Karissa, is on the team and i've been to plenty of her games where i've had a few encounterings with Jennifer so our interview this Thursday won't be our first time talking.
La Puente Softball team photo.

2. Questions:

  • Some people tend to coach a team instead of playing on one due to certain injuries, was being a softball coach something you've always consider doing as a career?
  • How would you describe what kind of coach you are?
  • What do you believe is your team's greatest strength? Why?
  • How would you describe the pace at which you work?
  • What is your greatest accomplishment so far with your team? Why?

Blog 3: Topic Choice and Semester 1 ESLR Goals

"To have long term success as a coach or in any position of leadership, you have to be obsessed in some way." -Pat Riley

Senior project topic: Softball Coach

I plan to do a few things this year to show growth in each of the ESLRs and hopefully most of them get me out of my comfort zone. Examples of how I plan to do so are below.
  1. Effective Learner
    • Junior year I spent almost every single lunch in pangs room because science is just not a subject that really seems to connect with me and maybe this year science won't be any different. I will definitely do the same thing as junior year and stay after lunch, or during, to get the help I need. I have plenty of friends who are great teachers and spend a little more time to make the subject a little more adaptable. The more I stayed in junior year during lunch the more I started to see my test scores improve and started to actually finish my work in class early with extra time to spare so I see no reason to change that.
    • Personal creativity for me probably won't be a tough one to show because I tend to be good at not limiting myself nor worrying about making mistakes as you will see through my presentations (hopefully) but definitely throughout my senior project and my senior project. Plus I tend to take full advantage my mentors will provide me with.
  2. Effective Communicator
    • To work towards my goal of being an effective communicator I would love to step up more in my classes when it comes to the roles we are given when we are in groups because my projection could use some work. However, I will never be big headed where I think my ideas are way better than others. Everyones opinion is important in some way and I hope to achieve that this year.
  3. Effective User of Technology:
    • I will take the full advantages that the internet, the library that's down my street, Cal Poly's library, and any family member/friend(s) that can provide me with the best knowledge about my topic or anything I have a question on. All of the above are always an option just in case I ever need a deeper understanding on a subject.
  4. Effective I-Poly citizen
    • To be an effective I-poly citizen I will continue to stick to dance but also this year I want to contribute as much as I can as a member of the prom committee. I will also help any classmate or anyone at I-poly that ever needs help with something I understand and they don't.

Blog 2: Summer Mentorship

I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do for my mentorship and since I usually help out my old elementary or middle school in the summer I thought why not mentor someone in teaching or counseling. Unfortunately Mrs. Schoonover, Sierra Vista Middle School's counselor, wasn't available so I ask my 7th grade English and History teacher, Johnny Chung, if I could mentor under him. He told me he could really use some help setting up his new classroom because he had to move across the campus. Teaching isn't something I can ever see myself doing as a career but I can't just pass it up as an option.

Contact Info:
(714) 213-4211

Having gone to middle school with Mr. Chung as my teacher it was really easy for me to mentor under him because any questions I had I knew he would always have a great answer to them. Before this summer, I would actually stop by my old middle school and help Mr. Chung and Mrs. Song (his wife who also works in the same middle school) with the same thing I did this summer so I wasn't lost on what I was doing but this summer was different because I actually wanted to know about the career and not just be kind and help. With that being said, I always had a few questions for them, or anything teacher for that matter, that I was always curious about.
A few questions that I had were:
  • How do you know that certain activities will be enjoyable but also helpful for the topic you are going to teach?
  • Was teaching your first choice right out of high school?
  • Out of your years of teaching if you had to pick a successful year, what year would that be and why?

The most important thing i've learned from this mentorship is that there is so much preparation involved before a student enters the classroom. The teacher had to go through each student's file and find whether there is anything in the past that will affect their ability to learn. Teachers also review where the student is weak and where they are strong. They look for any family problems just to examine any issues they had in the past. Another thing I learned that I found interesting was that most teachers now work in groups and they even create group test so everyone on the grade level can take the same test.

As much as I enjoyed helping an old teacher and learning about what being a middle school teacher takes, teaching just isn't for me. I wouldn't have the patience for it nor do I think i'm creative enough but I do like the thought of interacting with people everyday but maybe more of a coaching aspect. I had to stop playing softball do to an arm injuring and I could go back now but it's not really something I am still interested in. I love the sport and what it brings out of people and since this mentorship taught me that I might enjoy coaching, I don't see what the harm is in combining the two things I enjoy. My topic for senior year will be Coaching a Softball team. I've already got two people who would love to mentor me for my senior year.

Blog 1: 2013 2-Hour Presentation Reflections

1) The presentations I viewed were:

  • Hair Dressing - Ana B.
  • Karate - Rene L.
  • Personal Training - Andrew D.
  • Marine Biology - Elijah A.
  • Stage Managing - Gabriel B.
  • Foster Care - Victoria Y.
  • Physical Therapy - Elizabeth R.
  • Computer Analysis - Brent K.
  • Theoretical Physics - Hannah S.
  • Homeless Youth - Angel C.
2) My only question really was if questions are part of the 30 minutes you are required to speak? Other than that, there's no specific question I have towards someone or the 2 hours presentation.

3) The most important part of the senior presentation definitely has to be the essential question. The whole 2 hour presentation revolves around it and you have three of your own answers that helps not only the senior but the audience learn/know your topic.

4) The topic I'm considering to do for my senior year is Pastry Chef because I love pastries. I'm not much of a baker so this topic really caught my eyes. How can I not know how to bake but love and appreciate the pastries of others especially since my aunt and cousin own their own shop in San Pedro. I grew up around family members who make their own pastries and the concept of it all just really amazes me. (Wow I sound like a fatty haha)
